Lion King Theatre Trip!

In the February half term, PLAYtarium went to see the Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre! Fifty children came for the trip, which included a drama workshop led by two professional actors, and of course the amazing Lion King performance - which thanks to our funding from the Big Lottery, was free! The children really enjoyed the workshop, where they learned how to act like the kind of animals from the Lion King, such as cheetahs, giraffes, warthogs and elephants. The kids loved acting like wild animals! But the highlight of the day was, of course, the Lion King performance. The show was absolutely fantastic, and was an amazing experience for all the kids (and the staff too!). We can only hope that we’ll be able to offer such an amazing trip again in the future.

More activities than ever!

Picture
Phew, that was one full holiday! The kid’s really enjoyed it, but the staff are exhausted!

This February we tried lots of new activities, and brought back some old ones, and the result was a whole heap of fun! We had the Play Rangers in, who did outside cooking with the kids, we went rock climbing, did dance and drama, had media sessions, had drumming lessons, as well as our normal activities like bowling and cinema. We also had more arts and crafts activities, more sports, and a greater variety of toys for the kids to play with. We have a new kitchen set, a reading area, and new games for the PS3, including DJ Hero. But as if this wasn’t enough, we’ll be having even more fun, with even more new activities next holiday!
We’d really appreciate feedback on how your children have enjoyed the recent changes to PLAYtarium. Please let us know if you have any comments at all, or any new ideas for activities!

PLAYtarium makes its first visit to the Kidney Wood Play Trail

This November, PLAYtarium decided to go on a little adventure! We went to Kidney Wood, where’s a new and exciting play trail to explore. After spending some time at Stockwood Discovery Centre, the kids and staff walked down to the play trail on London Road. Although it was a little chilly, we had loads of fun. We collected lots of beautiful autumn leaves and sticks to use for some creative

activities later, and took rubbings of the trees in lots of different colours, which some of the kids took home. As it was cold, we didn’t spend as much time exploring the wood as we’d have liked, but we enjoyed the time we did have very much. We’d love to go back and have a chance to have another adventure, so this summer we’re planning to make a return trip to Kidney Wood.

PLAYtarium perform first play to The Over Fifties Lunch Club

PLAYtarium Holiday Club gave it’s first ever performance this summer. The children have taken part in various plays and dances before, but so far no one has ever performed to anyone outside of the club.

But this summer, that changed!

Over this summer Luton and Bedfordshire Youth Association (LuBYA) came to PLAYtarium to do drama sessions with the children, and discovered some stars in the making! After enjoying practicing Roald Dahl’s version of Little Red Riding Hood so much, the 6 girls decided
they wanted to show off their hard work. They went out on a trip to Farley Community Centre and performed the play to the Over Fifties Lunch Club, with a set and costumes they put together themselves. The play was a success, and the adults enjoyed themselves just as much as the kids did!

Hopefully, this is just the beginning of PLAYtarium’s little stars, and we hope that more children will work with the drama group to perform outside the club in the future.
